I made this work on 8 ½ x 11 inch sheets of white, buff and graph paper using colored pencils and graphite for the hand-written and drawn sections that accompany digital images. I added Washi tape to delineate shapes and connect the separate sheets. I made seven columns of varying lengths from 22 inches – 44 inches. The text, like in my other works, is my extemporaneous writing where I am observing conditions in the world as I work.

This is a detail from "The world is not its best self." The third column shows a photograph I accidentally used upside down. I wrote this text under it:
"the image is upside down --- inadvertently
inadvertently, appropriately
The world is not its best self."

The image in the second column is a photograph I took from the airplane as we were approaching Guatemala City. This is an excerpt from the text in this section:
"The images can be deceiving / misleading
un imagen de Guatemala del aire... parece tranquilo.
(an image of Guatemala from the air... it seems tranquil.)

I often include a square or rectangle in my work that I leave as a space to pause, to have silence. In this piece I wrote: "we need a very large safe space"

The other thing I do in much of my work is to leave mistakes visible. For example in this piece, when my pen leaked or the ink left an unexpected blob, I wanted them to be a part of the final work. These areas remind me that there will always be unexpected occurrences, that I cannot control everything.

The world continued to feel like a powder keg as I was working on this project. I decided to write (on the upper right section) from the standpoint of a child who is asking about all the suffering in the world and the lack of satisfactory answers provided by adults.

This last detail shows the layers of color, texture and tape I used throughout this piece. The redacting I do of sections of my text end up forming shapes of color and graphite that are for me, an important part of my work. These are areas I found repetitive, too personal, or not relevant.
